Why Cruise Loyalty Programs Matter

Almost every cruise line rewards repeat guests. The programs go by different names — Crown & Anchor Society, Latitudes Rewards, Captain’s Club, Captain’s Circle, Mariner Society, Carnival Rewards — but they share one idea: the more you sail with a line, the better it treats you. For a traveler who cruises often, understanding these programs can be worth as much as any sale.

Frequent Cruiser Program explains how they work in plain language: how points or credits are earned, what the tiers mean, what perks you can realistically expect, when a status match is possible, and how loyalty benefits sit alongside past-guest discounts. Every program detail here was checked on the lines’ own pages, and where a rule changes often we tell you to check the current terms.

Loyalty FAQ

Quick answers to the questions frequent cruisers ask most.

Three Things Every Program Has in Common

  1. Status is earned by sailing. Most programs count nights or days sailed; one major line now counts money spent instead.
  2. Benefits grow by tier. Entry levels bring small courtesies; upper tiers bring real value such as lounges, free services and priority everything.
  3. The line can change the rules. Programs are revised regularly. In 2026 Carnival replaced its long-running VIFP Club with Carnival Rewards, and Celebrity added new tiers above its top level.

That last point is why we always say: check the current terms on your line’s own loyalty page before you plan around a perk.

Is Loyalty Worth Chasing?

For someone who takes one cruise every few years, loyalty is a pleasant bonus rather than a strategy. Picking the right ship and fare matters far more. For travelers who sail several times a year, sticking mostly with one line or one family of lines can unlock perks that save real money: free drinks at upper tiers on some lines, complimentary laundry or internet time, priority tender tickets and reserved seating. It also adds the intangible benefit of being recognized.

  • Loyal to one line — fastest progress, best perks, least variety.
  • Loyal to one company’s brands — some groups recognize status across sister lines.
  • Free agent — best choice of ships and prices, slow progress everywhere.

There is no wrong answer, but it helps to choose deliberately. Loyalty status also affects your chances of a cabin upgrade; our sister site Cruise Upgrades explains how loyalty status affects upgrades.

Cruise Loyalty Questions

Do I have to sign up for a cruise loyalty program?

Most lines enroll you automatically after your first sailing, or when you create an account. Some newer programs ask existing members to accept new terms, so check your account after any program change.

Do cruise loyalty points expire?

Rules vary. Some programs keep your tier for life once earned, others measure activity over a set period, and some close inactive memberships. Read your line’s terms rather than assuming.

Do I keep my loyalty perks if I book through a travel advisor?

Yes. Your loyalty number goes on the booking whoever makes it, and you earn and use benefits as normal.
