How Cruise Loyalty Points Work

Nights, days or dollars — know what your line counts.

Cruise lines measure loyalty in one of three ways: by the nights you sail, by the cruise days you complete, or by what you spend. Many add bonuses on top. Knowing which model your line uses tells you how to earn faster.

Model One: Points per Night

The most common model gives a fixed number of points for each night on board. Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society, for example, awards one cruise point per night sailed and two per night for suite bookings or solo travelers. Norwegian’s Latitudes Rewards also starts at one point per night and adds an extra point per night for suite and Haven bookings and for sailings booked under its Latitudes Rewards Insider Offers.

Under this model, a long cruise in a modest cabin and a short cruise in a suite can earn similar totals. Travelers who mix trip lengths and cabin types can use that to their advantage.

Model Two: Cruise Days or Credits

Some lines count completed cruises and cruise days. Holland America Line’s Mariner Society, for instance, moves members through five star levels based on cruise-day credits. Princess Cruises’ Captain’s Circle measures progress by the number of cruises or cruise days completed. These programs reward steady, repeated sailing more than any single big booking.

Model Three: Spending

In September 2026, Carnival Cruise Line launched Carnival Rewards, replacing the VIFP Club and moving status from days sailed to money spent. Carnival says members earn three Stars for every dollar spent on eligible Carnival purchases, plus Stars from casino play, and that the earning rate can change under the program terms. Existing VIFP members carried their status into the new program. Spend-based programs favor travelers who book higher cabin categories or spend freely on board; frequent sailors on low fares progress more slowly than before.

Ways to Earn Faster

  • Book a suite on lines that award extra points for suites.
  • Travel solo in a standard cabin on lines that give solo guests a bonus.
  • Watch for double-point or bonus promotions, which lines run from time to time.
  • Choose longer sailings when a line counts nights or days.
  • Keep your loyalty number on every booking, including group bookings — missing points can be hard to claim later.

When Points Post

Points normally post after the cruise ends. Royal Caribbean, for example, says points appear within 30 days and new tier benefits begin on your next sailing. If you are close to a tier on a back-to-back trip, ask before you sail whether the new tier will apply in time.

Points Questions

Do I earn points for a cruise I booked but cancelled?

Generally no. Points and credits are posted after a completed sailing.

Do children earn loyalty points?

In many programs each guest has their own account and earns on their own sailings, but rules differ. Check the line’s terms if you are tracking points for the whole family.
